2005 Region 1 Contest

Welcome to the Official Information page for the 2005 New England Gliding Championships!

This web page will be updated as often as necessary before the contest, and it will be the place to get news and results during and after the competition.

This page was last updated on 10/10/06.

General Information   (March 21, 2005)
The contest will take place at the Warren-Sugarbush airport (0B7) in Warren, Vermont.  Once again, our hosts will be the Sugarbush Soaring Association, with help from other clubs and commercial operators in the Region.

The competition period will be from June 20 through June 25 (six days).  There will be an informal practice day on June 18, and a formal practice day on the 19th.  A task will be set on the formal practice day.

The combination Welcome Dinner and Mandatory Safety Meeting will take place at the airport at 6:30 pm on Sunday, June 19.

We expect to run 3 classes: 15-meter, Standard, and Sports.

Entry Fee
If $100 deposit is received by May 19 $325
After May 19 $360

The fee covers registration and up to six contest tows.

Checks should be made payable to "Region 1 Contest" and mailed to:

Tim Donovan
P.O. Box 359
Claremont, NH 03743

It would be helpful (but not required) if you would include with your deposit, a filled-out registration form.

It may also be possible to register on the SSA website, but the last time we checked, it wasn't working.  Give it a try.

Control Points   (March 21, 2005)
The control points have changed since last year.  Three new Start Points have been added (the turnpoints have not changed).

The Official Control Point files are dated:  March 21, 2005

Get your 2005 Control points here or here or here.

Watch this space for updates (but we don't expect any).

Weather   (March 23, 2005)
The forecast for the third week in June is for strong lift and high cloudbases.

We are lucky to have Ward Hindman as our official meteorolgist.  Ward's forecasts contributed to the success of the 2002 and 2003 Region 1 contests.  He will also be serving as sniffer in his HP-14T.  For a sample weather briefing sheet, click here, and here is a handy explanation.

Social   (April 21, 2005)
A social event will be planned for each evening.  We will have a mix of cookouts, catered meals, and at least one pizza night.  There will be at least one band (probably Bluegrass - stay tuned).  Also, amateur musicians are invited to bring their instruments.

Special Note for Those New to Racing   (April 7, 2005)
If you meet the minimum experience requirements, please consider entering the Sports Class.  Tasking in the Sports Class will be very conservative, along the lines of last year's Springfield fun-meet.  We will implement the Spratt Buddy System, and we will hold race-training seminars in the mornings before the regular Pilots Meetings.

Rules   (April 6, 2005)
You need an FAI Silver Badge to enter in the Sports Class and a Gold Distance leg to enter in the other classes.  Team entries are allowed in the Sports class.

All types of Flight Recorders, including COTS, will be allowed.  If you have a type unknown to the scorer, you may be required to supply cables and software to upload your flight logs to the scorer's PC.

You should fly with an ELT, but they are not required for this contest.

This will be a no-waterballast contest, due to lack of facilities at the airport.  You must fly at the same weight every day.

Good advice on sailplane racing here.  Don't forget to read the rules!
